The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning play based on V-Day founder/playwright Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 female identifying humans. With humor and grace, the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength.
This year the addition of RISE is something very local. The cast has created original music and monologues from personal experiences varying on topics from eating disorders, rape, the status of women, and more. V-Day Pontiac has embraced it’s local talent with this addition and hopes to make the theater experience very down to earth and relatable for female identifying folks and for male and non-binary allies in the community.
V-Day’s 2019 Spotlight will focus on women in prisons and jails, detention centers, and formerly incarcerated women. A direct connection exists between violence and abuse done to women and girls and the risk that those women and girls will be directly impacted by incarceration.
In the U.S., 86% of women in prison were sexually and/or physically abused prior to incarceration, as reported by The Vera Institute for Justice in 2017. In the aftermath of abuse, trauma can lead to substance abuse and addiction, which can easily become a pathway to more violence, crime and/or incarceration.
The RISE performance will take this theme to heart relating some of our own experiences to personal incarceration. Local female leaders will also speak on this topic and on the theme of V-Day to raise the status of women!
